„Stelle Fragen, fordere Antworten!“ Die Konjunktur abweichender Welterklärungen im Internet am Beispiel des 11. September 2001
Wissenschaft und Massenmedien dominierten in modernen Gesellschaften lange Zeit das Wirklichkeitsverständnis. Doch davon abweichende Vorstellungen existierten immer auch parallel: Esoterik und Verschwörungstheorien verfügen z. B. über eine nicht minder lange Geschichte, in der sie die dominierenden Weltdeutungen infrage stellten. KreationistInnen oder SkeptikerInnen der globalen Erwärmung stellen neuere – und durchaus populäre – Beispiele für solche alternativen Erklärungen dar. Die begrenzten Publikationsmöglichkeiten sorgten bislang dafür, dass derartigen Deutungen keine größere Bedeutung zukam. Verhilft das Internet mit seinen einfach und kostengünstig zugänglichen Kanälen diesen bisher randständigen Welterklärungen zu neuer Popularität und Relevanz?
Alternative Sichtweisen zu 9/11 weit verbreitet
Repräsentative Umfragen in 17 verschiedenen Ländern offenbarten 2008, dass durchschnittlich nur 46 % der Interviewten islamistischen Terrorismus für die Anschläge des 11. September 2001 verantwortlich machen. In Ägypten glaubt demnach eine Mehrheit von 43 %, Israel stecke hinter den Attacken, während in Deutschland immerhin noch 23 % der Befragten die US-Regierung selbst als Urheber betrachten. Es wäre also falsch anzunehmen, es handele sich bei diesen Sichtweisen um irrationale Minderheitsmeinungen einiger „Verschwörungstheoretiker.“
Während in den etablierten Massenmedien ein weitgehender Konsens darüber herrscht, dass Islamisten die Täter bei diesem Ereignis waren, florieren im World Wide Web abweichende Auslegungen. Transportiert werden sie etwa durch Dokumentationen wie „Loose Change“, der zu den populärsten Filmen im Internet gezählt wird. Darin werden die etablierten Erklärungen zu den Anschlägen systematisch dekonstruiert.
Organisierter Zweifel: Die „9/11-Wahrheitsbewegung“
Sein Produzententeam ist ein Teil der sogenannten „9/11-Wahrheitsbewegung“, die massive Zweifel an der „offiziellen Version“ der Ereignisse hegt. Die Gründe dafür sind vielfältig und kaum überschaubar. Weit verbreitet ist u. a. die These einer Sprengung des World Trade Centers, die darauf hindeute, dass Kräfte aus dem Innern des Landes hier „nachgeholfen“ hätten. Dazu haben sich diverse Gegen-Expertisen zu den bisherigen – nicht von einer Sprengung ausgehenden – wissenschaftlichen Artikeln und Gutachten herausgebildet. So etwa das Journal of 9/11 Studies, welches sich als Fachzeitschrift mit Peer Review ausgibt. Das mag zwar die KollegInnen nicht überzeugen, öffentlich wirksam sind diese abweichenden Erklärungen aber durchaus. Laien dürften ohnehin weder die eine, noch die andere Expertise hinreichend beurteilen können.
Neue Chancen für abweichende Deutungen
Hinzu kommt, dass durch die Hyperlinkstruktur des Internets Wissen nahezu beliebig aus seiner ursprünglichen Publikationsumgebung genommen und in neue Zusammenhänge eingegliedert werden kann. Eine solche Rekontextualisierung wird z. B. von Suchmaschinen wie Google vollzogen: Durch Ranglisten werden hier Ordnungen hergestellt, die nicht zwangsläufig der massenmedialen oder wissenschaftlichen Deutungshoheit entsprechen. Tatsächlich scheint das Spezialwissen, das von alternativen Erklärungen angeboten wird, in einigen Fällen hier dominant zu sein. So verkauft die „9/11-Wahrheitsbewegung“ etwa T-Shirts mit dem Aufruf „Google WTC-7.“ WTC-7 ist ein Gebäude, das neben den Twin Towers am 11. September einstürzte (siehe Abbildung oben) und besonders viel Aufmerksamkeit von den AnhängerInnen abweichender Deutungen erfuhr. Offensichtlich geht man davon aus, dass Google die eigenen Auslegungen besonders hoch in den Ranglisten positioniert.
Einflussnahme und Abwehr bei Wikipedia
Lässt sich aus diesen Beobachtungen nun schließen, dass sich Wissen aus der gesellschaftlichen Peripherie durch das WWW aus seiner Randständigkeit befreien kann und neue Relevanz erhält? Dieser Frage wurde in einer Diplomarbeit nachgegangen, die zu einem Großteil am Wiener Institut für Technikfolgen-Abschätzung entstand. Dazu wurde untersucht, wie in der gleichsam frei zugänglichen wie gesellschaftlich bedeutsamen Online-Enzyklopädie Wikipedia mit diesen abweichenden Deutungen umgegangen wird. Das Ergebnis fällt ambivalent aus: Zwar gelingt es den AnhängerInnen, ihr Wissen in Wikipedia einzubringen, was in einer traditionellen Enzyklopädie wohl kaum möglich gewesen wäre. Jedoch wird es deutlich unter dem Begriff „Verschwörungstheorien“ als fragwürdig gekennzeichnet. Zentrales Argument dabei: die Randständigkeit der Deutungen. Der Vielzahl unterschiedlicher Deutungsmöglichkeiten begegnet man hier also mit einer umso strengeren Konzentration auf gesellschaftlich gut institutionalisierte Wissensautoritäten.
Zunehmend Konflikte zwischen etablierten und abweichenden Deutungen?
Daraus deutet sich an, dass das Netz randständigem Wissen zwar entgegenkommt, dies aber keineswegs unmittelbar zu einer stärkeren Etablierung führt. Dies könnte zu zunehmenden Konflikten zwischen den unterschiedlichen Interpretationen führen, vor allem da das Stigma der Verschwörungstheorien hier nur begrenzt adäquat erscheint. Das Leitmotto der Bewegung ist nicht die Theoriebildung, sondern lautet: „Stelle Fragen, fordere Antworten!“ Das kann im Web 2.0 (nahezu) jede(r) tun, wodurch die etablierten Deutungen fortlaufend in die Defensive geraten und gleichzeitig eine Vielzahl neuer Interpretationsmöglichkeiten entstehen.

Netter Beitrag!
Allerdings geht es meiner Meinung nach gar nicht darum, Verschwörungstheorien wie 9/11 oder die Mondlandung von Randerscheinung in den anerkannten Mainstream zu katapultieren, sondern um die Verbreitung der eigentlichen Sachen, nämlich der Hinterfragung von News und Berichterstattung in den Medien. Durch die einfache Handhabung des Internets ist heute jeder in der Lage sich selbst ein Bild zu machen und Dinge nicht als gegeben hinzunehmen, sondern selbst nach Antworten zu suchen.
Ein super Film ist zum Beispiel auch “Let´s make money” ( http://www.moviemaze.de/filme/2630/lets-make-money.html ). Erschreckend!
Auf der anderen Seite sollte man aber auch nicht alles glaube, was in Filmen wie “Loose Change” dargelegt wird, denn auch hier werden Fakten weggelassen oder abgeändert, was ja fast schon logisch ist, da sich beide Seiten der selben Mittel bedienen.
Als Ergebnis kann man glaube ich festhalten, dass man nicht alles als Wahrheit hinnehmen sollte, sondern immer, egal ob Nachrichten oder Verschwörungsmanifeste, Thesen und Aussagen und vor allem die Intention der Autoren hinterfragen sollte.

Ich denke wir sind in jedem Fall weiterhin abhängig von Interpretationen anderer. Zwar haben wir nun vermehrt Zugang zu “Rohmaterial”, jedoch ist meistens Spezial- und Kontextwissen erforderlich, um dieses hinreichend beurteilen zu können. Die Frage, was denn dabei die “eigentlichen Sachen” sind, ist gar nicht so leicht zu beantworten und viele werden zu unterschiedlichen Ergebnissen kommen: Ein Verfechter alternativer Deutungen wird WTC 7 für besonders wichtig halten, ein Gegner dürfte darin eher eine ungerechtfertigte Fokussierung eines eher bedeutungslosen Ereignisses sehen…
